What to Know
- Choose a photo to post and tap theExpand icon in the lower-left corner of the preview.
- Or, pinch your fingers together on the image to zoom out and make it fit.
- Alternatively, use a third-party image resizer like Kapwing.com to make the picture 4:5.
This article explains how to fit a whole picture on Instagram without cropping. The instructions apply to the Instagram app for iOS and Android.
How to Make a Picture Fit on Instagram
Instagram automatically crops posts to an aspect ratio of 4:5 so they don’t take up too much space in your feed. Fortunately, the app offers a way to make your photos fit the post preview window, and it’s really easy:
- Choose a photo to post.
- Tap theExpand icon in the lower-left corner of the preview window or pinch your fingers together to zoom out and make it fit.
You’ll see a white border around the image (or a black border if dark mode is turned on in the Instagram app ). - TapNext to continue posting.
How to Resize a Post for Instagram
Instagram’s built-in method usually works fine, but if you’re unsatisfied with the results, there are plenty of other ways to resize a photo . Kapwing is ideal for resizing Instagram pictures specifically because it can add space around the image so it fits the 4:5 ratio requirements (you can even pick a custom border color).
- Visit Kapwing.com and selectGet started .
Kapwing will put a watermark on the bottom right side of the photo. Depending on how the border looks on your picture, a photo editing tool might be able to cover it up. - Sign in with one of the listed methods and complete any first-user steps if this is your first time using this picture resizer.
- Tap thearrow next to Create new, then chooseUpload .
- TapClick to Upload .
- Choose the photo you want to resize.
If the image is stored in a different app, like Photos in our example (on Android), tapMedia picker >Photos . - Select the image you just uploaded.
- ChooseEdit background >Resize Canvas .
- ChooseInstagram Post Portrait from the drop-down menu and4:5 for the size.
- Make sureFit to Center is chosen.
- Scroll down a little and tapOff if you don’t want the extra space around your image to be blurred. It’s here that you can optionally change the border color, too.
- TapApply .
- Make sure the image looks how you want it, then tapExport .
- TapExport a JPEG >Download . You can now post the new photo on Instagram.

To post multiple photos on Instagram , tapSelect Multiple instead of choosing a single photo, and then choose up to 10 images.
